“After 34 years we weren’t going to back down now when the need is greater than ever for our clients,” says Radiant Health Centers’ chief development officer, Susan Caumiant. “We are adamant in doing everything in our power to move forward in support of the more than 7,000 individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Orange County. We also knew that those who are fortunate enough to be able to give at this time will want to give to a cause like ours which provides health care equity for all.”

“It’s hard to fathom how a health care provider could test someone for an STI [sexually transmitted infection], have the results either be negative or positive and not provide them with information about the efficacy of condoms in STI protection,” said Philip Yaeger, executive director of Radiant Health Centers, a community provider in Irvine that receives Title X funds. June 27 marks National HIV Testing Day, which promotes testing and early diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS. This year’s theme, Doing It My Way, is a call to action that encourages people to get tested for HIV in a way that is best for them.
The first Orange County Pride Cultural Festival was a rather small affair in Santa Ana during the summer of 1989, but the event’s roots actually date back 20 years earlier—to New York City. A police raid of Greenwich Village’s Stonewall Inn in the early-morning hours of June 28, 1969, led to spontaneous and violent demonstrations by members of the gay community. Those events 50 years ago led to the creation of Pride Month, as well as annual celebrations across the country, during which rainbow-colored LGBT liberation flags proudly wave.
However, the first OC Pride, like Stonewall, was marred by violence—not from attendees, but from anti-LGBTQ goons who crashed the party. Law enforcement ordered Pride organizers to lock the festival gates temporarily as they considered shutting down the event. Attendees waited it out like caged animals before authorities finally deemed it safe for the Pride festival to continue.
Orange County is once again about to lace up its collective walking shoes for the 33rd Annual AIDS Walk O.C. on Saturday, June 1 hosted by Radiant Health Centers. For 2019, however, they’re improving the shine on all those walkers’ feet, by taking the stroll along Huntington Beach’s Boardwalk.
This summer Radiant Health Centers will host the 33rd Annual AIDS Walk OC on Saturday, June 1, at the Huntington Beach Boardwalk.
AIDS Walk OC 2019 is one of the oldest AIDS walks in the U.S. and, like all the AIDS Walks across the country, makes an immediate impact in the lives of those in the community living with HIV/AIDS. In just the last eight years, AIDS Walk OC has raised more than $3 million—in 2018, the Walk raised $200,000—helping to provide needed care for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in Orange County California
