How PEP Fits Into a Complete HIV Prevention Plan

In the News
HIV prevention with PEP.

If you’re concerned about HIV exposure, being aware of the different prevention options is the best way to take an active role in protecting yourself and your partners. At Radiant Health Centers, our LGBTQ+ health clinic in Orange County offers confidential PEP treatment for HIV prevention, so patients can make informed decisions about their health in a compassionate, nonjudgmental environment. To find out how PEP fits into a complete HIV prevention plan, keep reading to gain invaluable information that may protect your overall well-being.

How PEP Supports HIV Prevention

If you think you’ve been exposed to HIV, knowing what steps to take and acting quickly is the best way to protect your health and put your mind at ease. PEP is an emergency HIV prevention medication that’s designed to help minimize the risk of HIV infection after potential exposure.  , when started within 72 hours after exposure and taken for a 28-day period, PEP is an effective way to prevent HIV.

However, as with any medication, it’s important to understand what PEP is, how it works, and how it fits into a complete HIV prevention plan, so you can make the right decision for your health.

What Is PEP and How Does It Help Prevent HIV?

PEP (or post-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication designed to help reduce the risk of HIV infection after potential exposure. Unlike PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), which is used before exposure can occur, PEP is a time-sensitive emergency prevention medication intended for those who may have already been exposed.

This medication contains antiretroviral drugs that may help stop HIV from multiplying within the body and establishing an infection. PEP is prescribed by a healthcare provider and is taken over a 28-day period. To maximize effectiveness, this course of treatment should be followed exactly as directed.

PEP works best when started soon after potential exposure; the treatment window is within 72 hours. The sooner you start treatment, the better the chance that PEP will reduce the risk of an infection.

When Is PEP Recommended?

If you believe you have recently been exposed to HIV, whether through sex or any other type of contact, PEP may be recommended. A healthcare provider will evaluate your specific circumstances and determine if PEP is right for you based on key factors, including the type of exposure that occurred and your overall health.

PEP may be recommended after certain types of possible HIV exposure.

  • Unprotected sex or condom failure with someone who may be HIV+
  • Sexual assault or potential exposure
  • Using needles or injection devices with other individuals
  • Any other situation where HIV exposure may have possibly occurred

Because PEP must be started promptly and within a specific time window, it’s important to seek medical care as soon as possible. The sooner you speak with a healthcare provider, the sooner you can potentially start a PEP regimen.

The Difference Between PEP and PrEP

Though PEP and PrEP are both prescription medications that are designed to help reduce the risk of HIV infection, each is used in different circumstances. PEP is emergency prevention that is taken soon after possible HIV exposure, whereas PrEP is taken regularly prior to exposure. For more information about HIV prevention options, speak with a trusted healthcare professional.

How Testing and Treatment Support a Complete HIV Prevention Plan

While PEP may help prevent HIV after exposure, it’s just one part of a complete HIV prevention plan. Routine HIV testing is critical for gaining a clear understanding of a person’s current health status and determining the best approach to treatment.

Radiant Health Centers offers HIV testing and treatment services at our Orange County LGBTQ+ medical clinic. We offer confidential care in a welcoming environment to help patients protect their overall health and well-being.
