When Should You Consider PrEP for HIV Prevention?

In the News
Benefits of PrEP for HIV prevention.

If you’re at increased risk of contracting HIV, familiarizing yourself with the different prevention options can help you make the best decisions for your well-being. At Radiant Health Centers, our Orange County LGBTQ+ health clinic provides confidential PrEP services designed to help patients take control of their sexual health.

Wondering if PrEP is the right choice for you? Keep reading to learn more about this prescription medication, the benefits it provides, and when you should consider using it for HIV prevention.

An Overview of PrEP for HIV Prevention

Taking a proactive approach to HIV prevention rather than a reactive approach is the most effective way to protect your health. According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 31,800 new HIV infections were reported in the United States in 2024.

This data highlights the importance of preventive medications such as PrEP, which are designed to minimize the risk of infection before exposure. Understanding what PrEP is, how it works, and when it may be the right choice for you can help you make informed choices about your health.

What Is PrEP and How Does It Work?

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prescription medication specially formulated to prevent HIV infection. When taken consistently, PrEP significantly reduces the risk of HIV transmission through sexual intercourse and injection drug use.

Unlike PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) which is taken after potential exposure to HIV, PrEP is used proactively on an ongoing basis.

When Should You Consider Taking PrEP?

PrEP is a preventive medication intended for those who are HIV-negative and have a higher risk of contracting the virus. This prescription medication is most effective when taken consistently and combined with routine HIV testing.

PrEP may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider in several situations.

  • Having a sexual partner who is HIV-positive.
  • Being uncertain about your partner’s HIV status.
  • Having multiple or new sexual partners.
  • Not using condoms on a consistent basis.
  • Being recently diagnosed with an STI.
  • Sharing needles or syringes.
  • Seeking an additional layer of HIV protection.

Since the risk of HIV varies from person to person, having a conversation with a healthcare provider is the best way to determine if PrEP is right for you.

Consult With a Healthcare Provider

Exploring available HIV prevention options can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t know where to start. When you’re considering PrEP, an experienced healthcare professional can provide the guidance and support you need to make an informed, confident decision.

Our LGBTQ+ medical clinic provides a wide range of confidential services designed to meet the unique needs of our patients, including HIV testing and treatment options.
