What to Expect When Starting Hormone Replacement Therapy
For transgender and gender-diverse individuals, hormone replacement therapy can be an important step in their gender affirmation journey. However, not knowing what to expect can cause uncertainty. At Radiant Health Centers, our LGBTQ+ medical clinic provides compassionate care where patients are respected and supported.
Understanding the process can help ease any concerns you may have before you begin treatment. From your first evaluation to initiating the treatment, here’s what you need to know about hormone replacement therapy.
What You Should Know Before Starting Hormone Replacement Therapy
The decision to start hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is exciting, but it can come with a lot of questions and concerns. It’s natural to wonder how treatment works and what kinds of changes you can expect to see. Because the response to HRT varies from person to person, having realistic expectations and personalized medical guidance is essential. With that in mind, here’s a general overview of what you can expect when starting HRT.
Your First Appointment
During your first appointment you’ll have an opportunity to speak with a healthcare professional. In addition to reviewing your medical history and explaining the potential benefits and risks of treatment, your provider will also explain the blood tests or screenings that may be needed.
Additionally, you will be encouraged to discuss more personal details, such as your goals and what you hope to experience from HRT. You’ll also have time to ask questions, address any concerns, and learn what to expect moving forward.
Your Hormone Replacement Therapy Plan
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to HRT, it’s all based on the person. To develop a treatment plan that’s right for you, your provider will consider your health history, treatment goals and individual needs. They’ll talk to you about which hormones may be appropriate, how they will be administered, and what kinds of changes you will likely experience.
Again, because everyone responds differently to HRT, your treatment plan may change over time. Your provider will monitor your progress and depending on how your body responds, may make adjustments as treatment progresses.
Expect Changes to Occur Gradually
When starting HRT you naturally may be eager to see changes. This is absolutely understandable, though it’s important to keep in mind that changes take time. You may notice some changes within the first few months, while others may take longer to develop. Factors like the following can influence how quickly (and to what extent) you experience changes.
- The type of hormones you’re taking
- Your age
- Your genetics
- Your hormone levels
- Your overall health
Your provider can help you understand what kinds of changes may occur, and when. Having realistic expectations about hormone replacement therapy can help you feel more comfortable with your progress.
Monitoring Your Progress
After you begin HRT, your healthcare provider will want to monitor your progress to see how you are responding to treatment. This is why follow-up appointments are so important. During these appointments your provider may ask you about the changes you’ve experienced, how you’re feeling, and whether you have any questions or concerns. Blood tests may be ordered to check your hormone levels, and other aspects of your health may be monitored (blood pressure, for instance).
Monitoring your progress will allow your healthcare provider to determine whether any changes to your treatment are necessary. Seeking follow-up care at an LGBTQ+ medical clinic can provide you with a supportive environment where you’ll feel comfortable discussing your unique experience, as well as asking questions throughout your journey.
