Observing National Suicide Prevention Month in September

In the News
National Suicide Prevention Month in Irvine.

September marks National Suicide Prevention Month – a time when organizations and community members come together to spread awareness of this critical public health issue. As a provider of LGBTQ+ counseling and mental health services in Orange County, we regularly come into contact with those whose lives have been impacted by suicide. All month, we’ll be remembering those who lost their lives to suicide, and bringing attention to the resources available for those affected by mental health conditions.

Why National Suicide Prevention Month Matters

While discussing suicide is often difficult, it’s a vital topic that can lead people to get help and guidance at the most challenging times. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among all age groups, and its repercussions extend to friends, family members and the wider community.

In Orange County there were 7,072 suicides between January 2001 and August 2024, amounting to an average of 25 lives per month. Many more people experienced suicidal thoughts, attempted to take their own life, or visited an emergency room due to thoughts (or incidents) of self-harm. These figures reveal the prevalence of this issue, and shows why observing National Suicide Prevention Month is truly important.

A national survey by The Trevor Project highlighted disproportionately high rates of suicide risk in the LGBTQ+ community. The data indicates that more than 1 in 10 LGBTQ+ young people attempted suicide in the past year. Also, half of LGBTQ+ young people wanted mental health care but were unable to access it. Access to mental health counseling for the LGBTQ+ community is crucial, and contributes significantly to improving well-being and quality of life.

The Importance of Promoting Mental Health Awareness

Throughout September and beyond, promoting mental health awareness plays a vital role in preventing suicide and suicidal thoughts. While the importance of discussing mental health concerns is widely acknowledged, many still feel stigmatized when addressing these topics.

Engaging with counseling and support groups provides the necessary resources and strategies for maintaining positive mental health. Whether at work, school, or with peers and family, building a culture of open communication and support absolutely helps prevent suicides in the community.

How Our Counseling Services Help Orange County Residents

At Radiant Health Centers, we offer a series of services to support patients who are experiencing mental health challenges. We run regular virtual group sessions focused on resolving issues related to anxiety, depression, self-esteem and substance abuse. In addition, there are limited sessions at our LGBTQ+ medical clinic. For Orange County patients struggling with mental health concerns, talk therapy of this kind is an essential tool that helps develop coping strategies.
