Education and Testing Can Reduce STD Transmission Rates

In the News
Orange County STD symptoms.

At the Radiant Health Centers medical clinic in Irvine, STD testing and treatment are a significant part of the work we do. With reports indicating a consistent rise in STD rates in recent years, offering support to Orange County’s LGBTQ+ community has never been more important. Now more than ever, STD education, testing and treatment are crucial to turn the tide against this concerning trend.

How Do You Get STDs?

The CDC’s most recent data highlighted a 7% rise in STDs between 2017 and 2021, with no indications that this trend is lessening. However, to change this trajectory it’s important to understand how an STD is transmitted.

Sexually transmitted diseases are typically caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites that are passed from one person to another during sexual contact. Unprotected sexual contact via vaginal, anal or oral sex without a condom or dental dam is the most common way an STD is transmitted.

It is possible for nonsexual transmission of STDs, with skin-to-skin contact potentially causing herpes and HPV. In addition, sharing needles can spread infections like HIV and hepatitis, while some STDs can be passed from mother to child during pregnancy.

What Are the Common STD Symptoms?

First, recognizing STD symptoms is a valuable way to prevent transmission and also get fast treatment. However, be aware that many people are asymptomatic, yet still capable of spreading an infection.

  • Itching or burning in the genital area.
  • Sores or bumps around the genitals.
  • Discharge from the penis or vagina.
  • Pain in the abdomen or pain during sex.
  • A high temperature and flu-like symptoms.

Getting Tested for STDs

STD testing allows each individual to take control of their sexual health. But while STDs can be found in people of all ages, only limited numbers will get regular testing. To find a clinic in the local vicinity, conduct a search for STD testing near me. Having an LGBTQ+-friendly location like Radiant Health Centers can make all the difference, and increase the likelihood of testing becoming a regular and helpful routine.

How Are STDs Treated?

Alongside education and testing, STD treatment is pivotal in reducing transmission in the LGBTQ+ community. And as we have seen with HIV testing and treatment, significant change is only possible when effective healthcare is readily accessible.

STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes and syphilis all require a targeted treatment approach. And while many avoid treatment because there is no sign of an issue (or there’s a minor, “ignorable” symptom), more than likely, future health repercussions will become evident. At Radiant Health Centers we welcome the LGBTQ+ community to visit us for testing – we put our commitment to reduce STD transmission into practice every day.
