June 27, 2023 is the return of National HIV Testing Day, and Radiant Health Centers is proud to offer our support once again. What Is National HIV Testing Day?

National HIV Testing Day has been observed annually around the country since 1995. This day is meant to encourage HIV testing and raise awareness of the benefits of knowing your status, including realizing the advantages of an early diagnosis.

The theme for 2023 is “Take the Test & Take the Next Step,” focusing on how understanding your status can help you make smart decisions about your health. Regardless of the results, testing ensures that people are best prepared to prevent getting or transmitting HIV. In short, know your status to help end the HIV epidemic.

What National HIV Testing Day Can Achieve

This year’s theme emphasizes the treatments associated with testing. These treatments are available for those most at risk and those with a positive test result. For example, if you are in an at-risk category, PrEP dramatically decreases the chances of contracting HIV. Similarly, PEP is an antiretroviral medication for people who believe they may have recently been exposed.

In addition, Rapid ART is a combination of drugs that keeps the viral load low. For people living with HIV, Rapid ART reduces the chance of transmitting the virus and helps patients live long, healthy lives.

Staying Healthy With STD Testing Services

While this day focuses on HIV awareness, it’s also important to note just how essential a reliable STD testing service is for the Orange County community. STD testing is not included with HIV testing but it can be requested – and the results can help limit transmission of other infections. New Study Shows the Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy

As the largest LGBTQ+ healthcare provider in Irvine, Radiant Health Centers offers our Orange County clients hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – one among several vital gender-affirming care services we deliver. In light of an important study published earlier this year, we are emphasizing the importance of these services.

There are also ongoing studies demonstrating HRT’s significant physical, social and mental health benefits for transgender and nonbinary individuals. In response, we remain committed to bringing leading health services to the community.

New Study Highlights the Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy

Published by the New England Journal of Medicine, this study involved 315 participants ages 12 to 20. Nearly 70% of participants who commenced the study with severe depression reported improvements to the minimal or moderate range after two years of hormone therapy. This stark decrease in depressive symptoms highlights the crucial role of HRT in supporting the mental health of transgender and nonbinary youth.

Discrepancies between physical appearance and inner sense of gender identity can often contribute to mental health issues. HRT (also called gender-affirming hormones) is essential in aligning a transgender person’s physical characteristics with their gender identity.

These findings demonstrated that HRT contributed to better appearance congruence, increased life satisfaction – and reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. As shown by many previous studies and affirmation from the transgender community, access to HRT is vital for improving health and well-being.

Transgender and nonbinary individuals have historically encountered numerous obstacles in accessing gender-affirming healthcare – particularly to services tailored to their unique needs. These barriers have perpetuated disparities and adversely affected individual health outcomes, and the findings of this study clearly reinforce the necessity of accessible, affirming LGBTQ+-friendly healthcare services.

June 3rd, 2023 marked the return of the Radiant Health Centers’ Annual Gala at The Turnip Rose Promenade in Costa Mesa. Once again, guests gathered to celebrate the work of advocates and raise funds for LGBTQ+ healthcare in Orange County. And in a night filled with joy and recognition, the community outdid itself with its generous giving.

This year’s Gala was an evening to remember as guests joined together for fun, dancing and celebration. Designed around the theme of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, attendees united for good food and live entertainment against a fairytale backdrop. Gala co-chairs Adrienne Matros and Zach Abrams did magnificent work, delivering a memorable event that will be long remembered.

As always, the broader theme of the Gala took precedence as guests and advocates gave generously in support of medical care for the LGBTQ+ community. The highlight of the night came with the presentation of the Radiant Compassion Award 2023. This year’s deserving recipient is Broadway performer Javier Muñoz. As an actor and singer, Javier is widely celebrated for his role as Alexander Hamilton in the musical, “Hamilton.”

The Radiant Compassion Award recognizes his dedicated work fighting for LGBTQ+ rights and HIV/AIDS advocacy. Working with organizations like GMHC and (RED), Javier epitomizes the qualities of compassion and equality.

At the heart of the Gala is our ongoing commitment to fundraising. And just as with previous events, guests and advocates gave generously in support of LGBTQ+ healthcare services in Orange County. Almost $260,000 was raised in total, assisted by a $25,000 matching gift. Throughout May, Radiant Health Centers joins individuals and organizations nationwide to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month. As the leading provider of LGBTQ+ counseling and mental health services in Orange County, we have witnessed directly the impact these issues have on people in Orange County. For over 70 years, this time of year has been dedicated to promoting mental health education, awareness and advocacy, and we are proud to play our part once again.

Radiant Health Centers Recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month dates back to 1949, and aims to educate the wider public on mental health issues like depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and other concerns. This year’s theme is called Look Around, Look Within. It recognizes the importance of stable housing, healthy home lives – and strong communities – for positive mental health.

Advocates are encouraged to raise awareness through social media, local events and workshops. This month is also a good time to consider using an online mental health screening to identify any symptoms of a potential mental health disorder or condition.

Mental Health and the LGBTQ+ Community

As we have previously reported, Orange County LGBTQ+ youth face mental health disparities. Sadly, younger people in the community are disproportionately affected by various mental health disorders. In fact, according to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America, LGBTQ+ teens are six times more likely to experience symptoms of depression than heterosexual teens.

At Radiant Health Centers, we believe it’s more important than ever to shine a light on these challenges and work towards a future where mental health care is accessible, inclusive and stigma-free for all.

How Radiant Health Centers Is Combating Mental Health Issues

While Radiant Health Centers is widely recognized for its commitment to ending the AIDS epidemic through accessible testing and treatment, counseling and mental health services are equally important to our mission. Recently, we launched our Youth Drop-In Center in Orange County. Aimed at young LGBTQ+ people ages 12–26, the space is available for mentoring, affirming resources, emotional support and socializing.

Alongside our LGBTQ+ youth and mentorship program, here the younger generation has access to the tools and support needed to elevate their mental health as they progress into adulthood.

30th Annual AIDSWatch Focused on Ending the HIV Epidemic

AIDSWatch 2023 in Washington, D.C.

AIDSWatch – the largest, constituent-led HIV advocacy event in the United States – returned for its 30th anniversary on March 19–21, 2023. As the leading HIV testing and treatment provider in Orange County, Radiant Health Centers was proud to join the more than 350 HIV advocates from 37 states in attendance in Washington, D.C. Over three days, attendees met with 182 congressional offices, all steadfast in their determination to end the HIV epidemic in this country.

What Is AIDSWatch?

In the 30 years since it began, AIDSWatch has grown from a small group of HIV/AIDS advocates working to improve the lives of people living with HIV to a groundbreaking advocacy event making a widely-felt difference.

AIDSWatch advocates for policies that address various aspects of life for people living with HIV, including healthcare access, housing, mental health and substance use disorder services, supportive services, access to quality food, reproductive choices and employment. Along with events like World AIDS Day, the event provides an opportunity for collaboration across all communities and political lines by focusing on achieving shared goals.

A delegation from Radiant Health Centers visited Capitol Hill to engage with California representatives, including Max Ernst, Deputy Chief of Staff/Legislative Director for Rep. Katie Porter. As Orange County’s largest provider of HIV care, we have seen the impact of this global public health issue on individuals and communities.

Our staff members, clients and colleagues had productive discussions on the need for greater federal funding to tackle the wide-ranging issues associated with HIV. International Transgender Day of Visibility is an annual event dedicated to celebrating the lives of transgender and non-binary people and raising awareness of discrimination. As a longstanding provider of trans healthcare and hormone replacement therapy in Orange County, Radiant Health Centers is once again proud to support this special day. What Is Transgender Day of Visibility?

Transgender Day of Visibility takes place every year on March 31. Dating back to 2009, the event was created by Rachel Crandall, a Michigan-based transgender activist. From its very beginning, addressing and helping change the common media narratives about transgender people was a central focus.

This event was intended to celebrate the many accomplishments of transgender and non-binary people worldwide – while still recognizing the issues with discrimination, justice and transgender barriers to physical and mental healthcare. With the eyes of the world on the transgender community, Transgender Day of Visibility is truly a unique opportunity to draw attention to the experiences of trans people, and to continue the focus on making improvements in healthcare (and in related social and legal concerns).

Understanding the Importance of Transgender Day of Visibility

As reported by GLAAD, there were over 200 anti-LGBTQ bills filed in the United States in 2022, with over half targeting transgender people. The growing visibility of trans and non-binary people has delivered many benefits, but there are also issues with misinformation and even vilification by politicians and the media. Transgender Day of Visibility is a chance to tell authentic stories – and to bring a greater understanding of the transgender community to the general public.

With an emphasis on increasing visibility, on March 31 we will celebrate the trans community and also acknowledge that challenges still exist. As the star of the award-winning musical “Hamilton” and co-creator of the Alexander Hamilton role, Javier is renowned for his performances on Broadway. But he is also a committed advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and people living with HIV/AIDS, working as a (RED) global ambassador and serving on the board of trustees for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

New LGBTQ+ Youth Drop-in Center Opens in Orange County

Radiant Health Centers is pleased to announce the opening of our LGBTQ+ youth drop-in center. Along with our LGBTQ+ youth and mentorship program, sexual health education groups and gender affirming closet, the drop-in center provides further opportunities to improve the physical and mental health of young people in Orange County. Visitors to the center are assured of a safe space to relax and unwind, engage with their peers and access valuable services.

Our youth drop-in center is open on Mondays and Fridays from 4–7 p.m. for anyone who is 12–26 years old. Featuring snacks, games, self-care items, career coaching, a gender affirming wardrobe and many more fun activities, the center is an accepting and supportive environment where attendees are free to be themselves.

Many in the LGBTQ+ community feel isolated and lack a supportive network of friends and family they can turn to. An inability to connect and communicate with others reduces a person’s quality of life – the results are clear to see with LGBTQ+ youth facing mental health disparities.

We are committed to helping young people feel empowered and confident by providing a safe space, resources, advocacy and community. With the opening of our youth drop-in center we actively play a role in addressing many issues.
