Orange County LGBTQ+ History Month 2023.

Throughout the month of October, Orange County’s leading medical clinic, Radiant Health Centers, will join with the local community to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month. This annual observance highlights the achievements and challenges found at every stage of the LGBTQ+ community’s rich history. Join us in October to spread awareness of the many trailblazing icons and civil rights struggles that contributed so much to contemporary society.

The Roots of LGBTQ+ History Month

The origins of LGBTQ+ History Month date back to 1994. Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, believed a month should be dedicated to teaching about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer history. The celebration has certainly grown since those early beginnings, and is now observed in many countries throughout the world.

What Happens During LGBTQ+ History Month?

During October, events, talks and celebrations take place to look back at important moments in history, while also encouraging openness about the LGBTQ+ experience. Many schools, colleges and universities use this month to educate students about pivotal moments in the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement, examining figures who contributed significantly to LGBTQ+ culture.

Just as with the National LGBTQ Health Awareness Week in March, shining this light on the unique challenges and history of the community is vital for both reducing discrimination and celebrating diversity.

Important Dates During LGBTQ+ History Month

Throughout the month, local and online events help educate participants on the struggles that led to the greater acceptance of LGBTQ+ people we see today. Open conversations can also recognize the work that still lies ahead. Here are some essential dates for your calendar.

October 8th Is Lesbian Day

Lesbian Day celebrates lesbian identity and raises awareness about issues faced by lesbians specifically.

3rd Wednesday of October Is Pronouns Day

Pronouns Day is about empowering individuals to express their identity, while educating people about the importance of using correct pronouns to show respect and inclusion.

October 17th–24th Is Genderfluid Visibility Week

Cancer screening in Orange County.

Cancer screenings have been a vital component of disease prevention for many decades. At our Irvine medical clinic we offer inclusive screening services to patients throughout the Orange County community. However, participation rates fell during the COVID-19 pandemic, and many patients are not getting the early treatment they need. Now more than ever, it’s crucial to spread awareness of the importance of routine cancer screenings.

Falling Rates of Cancer Screenings After the COVID-19 Pandemic

The recent pandemic introduced significant disruption to many aspects of healthcare. And as screening participation rates fell, cancer screenings were certainly affected along with other screening types. This means that many people did not benefit from a potential early diagnosis.

According to a recent study published by The Journal of the American Medical Association, the rate of cervical cancer screening fell 36% in the second quarter of 2020, and as much as 45% for colorectal cancer.

While figures have improved since 2020, a significant level of reduced care continued into 2021. This reduction in routine cancer screening must be addressed to ensure that at-risk patients are diagnosed when the disease is most treatable.

Why Cancer Screenings Are so Important

Routine cancer screenings provide early detection of this disease, with a goal of achieving the best health outcomes. With a fast diagnosis, you can find a compassionate healthcare home in Orange County that delivers dedicated treatment. Early detection often results in treatment solutions that are less aggressive than those required for cancers at advanced stages.

In addition, certain screenings (such as a colonoscopy for colorectal cancer) can prevent cancer by identifying and removing precancerous growths. Using a proactive approach you can learn about risk factors and take control of your health.

When Should a Person Get Screened for Cancer?

Guidelines for screenings vary depending on the type of cancer. When you’re unsure whether or not you need a screening, make sure to speak with your provider for advice. Here are some general recommendations.

  • Colorectal cancer screening often starts at age 45, then continues at regular intervals.
  • Cervical cancer screenings usually take place between ages 21 and 65.
  • Breast cancer mammograms may begin at age 40, and screening intervals vary depending on age.
