Orange County holiday mental health support.

The holidays are often seen as a time of joy and celebration, yet many people across Orange County face significant challenges during this time. As a provider of counseling and mental health services in Irvine, we are acutely aware of the toll the holiday season can take on health and well-being. If you or a loved one are struggling, it’s important to know that help and support is available.

Why Mental Health Issues Are Prevalent During the Holidays

Since many stressors can appear at once, the holiday season can sometimes be overwhelming. The pressures of financial concerns, family conflict, managing expectations, unresolved grief, social gatherings or loneliness can all contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety.

For some, these feelings are temporary and the new year rings in fresh optimism. Many others experience mental and emotional challenges throughout the year, with the holidays only adding further pressure. In all cases, access to necessary resources and a supportive space can make all the difference.

Getting Mental Health Support During the Holiday Season

Counseling is a crucial aspect of the work we do at Radiant Health Centers. From clients living with HIV to those dealing with substance abuse, we offer virtual counseling sessions with qualified professionals. Due to the mental health disparities faced by Orange County’s LGBTQ+ youth, we recently opened our LGBTQ+ Youth and Mentorship Program for young people moving into adulthood. Whether you are struggling with loneliness or feeling overwhelmed by added holiday social pressures, talk therapy is a way to gain some much-needed perspective.

Access to Resources During the Holidays

For many across Orange County, mental health issues are so often exacerbated by the difficulties of accessing healthy food and consistent housing. Feelings of stress and anxiety are compounded when your living arrangements are unstable, and your body isn’t getting the nourishment it needs.

At Radiant Health Centers we provide accessible social services that are important throughout the year – and invaluable during the holiday season. The food pantry is a vital resource at this time when the cost of living is high and food prices are rising. Those eligible receive groceries and prepared meals – it’s a reliable source of healthy nutrients. Our clients also work with a case manager to ensure they can access services like housing and the mental health counseling they need.

During the holidays, it’s important to remember that help is never far away. If your emotional health is causing physical illness, depression or substance abuse, speak with a medical professional and get the help you need.

AIDS Walk Orange County.

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, Radiant Health Centers hosted its 37th Annual AIDS Walk 2023 in Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. As a longtime provider of HIV testing and treatment at our Irvine Clinic, this fundraising event in support of HIV/AIDS is a cause close to our hearts. Once again the community gave their full support, contributing generously to critical initiatives in HIV healthcare and social services.

Orange County Community Supports 37th Annual AIDS Walk

Attendees at this year’s event included the Mayor of Irvine, Farrah N. Khan; the Mayor of Fountain Valley, Kim Constantine; and Emmy® Award-winning journalist and HIV awareness advocate Tony Morrison. This AIDS Walk saw participants, supporters and donors deliver a strong message of solidarity, compassion and hope in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The event’s more than 300 participants showed what can be achieved when a community unites behind a common goal. The total funds raised strongly demonstrate this, with an incredible $120,000 donated.

The Impact of AIDS Walk Orange County

Trans Awareness Month in Irvine.

November marks the return of Transgender Awareness Month for 2023. As a trusted provider of hormone replacement therapy in Orange County, we have long been committed to delivering gender-affirming care to our patients. This November, we are pleased to join the many voices supporting and celebrating the transgender community in pursuit of a more inclusive society.

What Is Transgender Awareness Month?

Transgender Awareness Month (often called Trans Awareness Month) is dedicated to raising awareness of the transgender community. Throughout the month, in-person and online events will highlight the contributions, issues and struggles experienced by trans people around the world.

Advocacy efforts include celebrations and educational events, each of which helps increase the visibility of transgender people in Orange County and beyond. At Radiant Health Centers we’re proud to offer our support in many ways – and of course, that includes talking about the benefits of hormone replacement therapy.

Why Does Trans Awareness Month Matter?

During November, individuals and communities will recognize and celebrate transgender people. They will examine and discuss ways to tackle inequalities in healthcare, employment, as well as in other areas of society. Trans Awareness Month shines a light on issues transgender people face, including various challenges and that unfortunately include discrimination and violence. As a formal acknowledgement of the trans community, this time is dedicated to advocating for rights and equal treatment.

By raising awareness, it is indeed possible to reduce prejudice and increase understanding of the experiences of transgender people. And with social events like the gender affirming closet, there will be many opportunities to foster supportive local communities.

Important Dates in November

There are two notable dates among November’s many events. First, Transgender Awareness Week takes place between November 13–19. With an intensive series of events addressing the violence and discrimination faced by the transgender community, this week is the month’s busiest. During this time, advocacy and community engagement are key aspects that lead up to the Day of Remembrance.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is November 20th. Founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, this day is a special occasion that honors the memory of those who have had their lives taken by anti-transgender violence.

How We Support the Transgender Community

At Radiant Health Centers, we support transgender people with gender-affirming care – hormone replacement therapy is just one of our offerings. We work closely with each individual during their transition, helping them align with their gender identity.

Patients can be assured of receiving compassionate, culturally competent, stigma-free care from our team of knowledgeable medical professionals. We also support the transgender community with our primary medical care services, mental health support, along with other general health treatments.

Irvine healthcare giving.

As we approach the end of 2023, Radiant Health Centers is asking for support to uplift the community with the gift of healthcare. The Year End Appeal 2023 is our annual request for giving to improve healthcare equality in Orange County. And thanks to an anonymous donor, the first $50,000 raised by December 31st will be matched dollar-for-dollar.

Why LGBTQ+ Healthcare Giving Matters

As many will be aware, 2023 saw over 100 bills that restrict healthcare access to those in the LGBTQ+ community. Healthcare equity risks being further eroded, with many transgender people left feeling vulnerable.

In response, Radiant Health Centers remains committed to serving the Orange County community, with plans to provide exceptional care to even more patients in the coming years. Continuing and expanding our mission is only possible with community support.

By contributing to our Year End Appeal, you can help us deliver our medical and counseling services, including early diagnosis cancer screening and HIV treatments.

How Giving Helps Us Deliver Affirming Healthcare

To improve care services and serve more people, Radiant Health Centers is applying for Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) status. By adopting EPIC, a new and advanced electronic medical records system, we are positioned to secure FQHC status and better the experiences of our patients and providers.

Every gift we receive contributes to the ongoing success of our primary care, mental health services and youth program. And with the generosity of our supportive Orange County community, we aim to reach a new level of service in the coming years.

How You Can Help Us Reach Our Match Goal

As mentioned, an anonymous donor has kindly offered to match the first $50,000 donated by December 31st. This means you can double the impact of your donation to help deliver healthcare equality to the community’s most vulnerable. With last year’s appeal raising more than $120,000, we hope for another successful campaign to help us achieve FQHC status.

Why Supporting LGBTQ+ Healthcare Is so Important

At Radiant Health Centers we firmly believe that a person’s LGBTQ+ identity or HIV status should not stand in the way of receiving the best medical care. By consolidating our medical records, patients can enjoy an efficient, user-friendly system without the need to recount past personal traumas. In addition, by expanding our range of services (including HIV/Hepatitis C, addiction and PrEP care), increasing numbers of Orange County patients will get access to the stigma-free treatment they need.

Support Our Year End Giving Campaign and Uplift the Community

Radiant Health Centers deliver stigma-free healthcare in Orange County thanks to the generosity of the community. Please consider giving to our Year End Appeal and support our medical clinic and mental health program. For all medical inquiries, call (949) 809-5700 or request an appointment today.

Orange County LGBTQ+ History Month 2023.

Throughout the month of October, Orange County’s leading medical clinic, Radiant Health Centers, will join with the local community to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month. This annual observance highlights the achievements and challenges found at every stage of the LGBTQ+ community’s rich history. Join us in October to spread awareness of the many trailblazing icons and civil rights struggles that contributed so much to contemporary society.

The Roots of LGBTQ+ History Month

The origins of LGBTQ+ History Month date back to 1994. Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, believed a month should be dedicated to teaching about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer history. The celebration has certainly grown since those early beginnings, and is now observed in many countries throughout the world.

What Happens During LGBTQ+ History Month?

During October, events, talks and celebrations take place to look back at important moments in history, while also encouraging openness about the LGBTQ+ experience. Many schools, colleges and universities use this month to educate students about pivotal moments in the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement, examining figures who contributed significantly to LGBTQ+ culture.

Just as with the National LGBTQ Health Awareness Week in March, shining this light on the unique challenges and history of the community is vital for both reducing discrimination and celebrating diversity.

Important Dates During LGBTQ+ History Month

Throughout the month, local and online events help educate participants on the struggles that led to the greater acceptance of LGBTQ+ people we see today. Open conversations can also recognize the work that still lies ahead. Here are some essential dates for your calendar.

October 8th Is Lesbian Day

Lesbian Day celebrates lesbian identity and raises awareness about issues faced by lesbians specifically.

3rd Wednesday of October Is Pronouns Day

Pronouns Day is about empowering individuals to express their identity, while educating people about the importance of using correct pronouns to show respect and inclusion.

October 17th–24th Is Genderfluid Visibility Week

Genderfluid Visibility Week seeks to educate the public about the nuances of gender fluidity, to dispel misconceptions – and provide a platform for genderfluid individuals to share their experiences.

Spread Awareness During LGBTQ+ History Month

Spreading awareness of the hidden history of the LGBTQ+ community is at the heart of LGBTQ+ History Month. By taking part in local events, sharing stories across social media, even advocating for better primary medical care services, you can contribute to helping improve the lives of many in our community. And after more than 30 years of delivering healthcare to all, regardless of gender or sexuality, we are proud to play our part in tackling stigma and discrimination.

Cancer screening in Orange County.

Cancer screenings have been a vital component of disease prevention for many decades. At our Irvine medical clinic we offer inclusive screening services to patients throughout the Orange County community. However, participation rates fell during the COVID-19 pandemic, and many patients are not getting the early treatment they need. Now more than ever, it’s crucial to spread awareness of the importance of routine cancer screenings.

Falling Rates of Cancer Screenings After the COVID-19 Pandemic

The recent pandemic introduced significant disruption to many aspects of healthcare. And as screening participation rates fell, cancer screenings were certainly affected along with other screening types. This means that many people did not benefit from a potential early diagnosis.

According to a recent study published by The Journal of the American Medical Association, the rate of cervical cancer screening fell 36% in the second quarter of 2020, and as much as 45% for colorectal cancer.

While figures have improved since 2020, a significant level of reduced care continued into 2021. This reduction in routine cancer screening must be addressed to ensure that at-risk patients are diagnosed when the disease is most treatable.

Why Cancer Screenings Are so Important

Routine cancer screenings provide early detection of this disease, with a goal of achieving the best health outcomes. With a fast diagnosis, you can find a compassionate healthcare home in Orange County that delivers dedicated treatment. Early detection often results in treatment solutions that are less aggressive than those required for cancers at advanced stages.

In addition, certain screenings (such as a colonoscopy for colorectal cancer) can prevent cancer by identifying and removing precancerous growths. Using a proactive approach you can learn about risk factors and take control of your health.

When Should a Person Get Screened for Cancer?

Guidelines for screenings vary depending on the type of cancer. When you’re unsure whether or not you need a screening, make sure to speak with your provider for advice. Here are some general recommendations.

  • Colorectal cancer screening often starts at age 45, then continues at regular intervals.
  • Cervical cancer screenings usually take place between ages 21 and 65.
  • Breast cancer mammograms may begin at age 40, and screening intervals vary depending on age.

Arrange a Cancer Screening With Radiant Health Centers

Radiant Health Centers is committed to spreading awareness about the need for routine cancer screenings. As part of our primary medical care services, patients can access routine health screenings and guidance from our friendly, knowledgeable staff. Along with our Orange County screening partners we advise people on the right screening approach. Our goal is to ensure that every patient gets quick access to the preventive treatments necessary for long-term good health.

Orange County STD symptoms.

At the Radiant Health Centers medical clinic in Irvine, STD testing and treatment are a significant part of the work we do. With reports indicating a consistent rise in STD rates in recent years, offering support to Orange County’s LGBTQ+ community has never been more important. Now more than ever, STD education, testing and treatment are crucial to turn the tide against this concerning trend.

How Do You Get STDs?

The CDC’s most recent data highlighted a 7% rise in STDs between 2017 and 2021, with no indications that this trend is lessening. However, to change this trajectory it’s important to understand how an STD is transmitted.

Sexually transmitted diseases are typically caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites that are passed from one person to another during sexual contact. Unprotected sexual contact via vaginal, anal or oral sex without a condom or dental dam is the most common way an STD is transmitted.

It is possible for nonsexual transmission of STDs, with skin-to-skin contact potentially causing herpes and HPV. In addition, sharing needles can spread infections like HIV and hepatitis, while some STDs can be passed from mother to child during pregnancy.

What Are the Common STD Symptoms?

First, recognizing STD symptoms is a valuable way to prevent transmission and also get fast treatment. However, be aware that many people are asymptomatic, yet still capable of spreading an infection.

  • Itching or burning in the genital area.
  • Sores or bumps around the genitals.
  • Discharge from the penis or vagina.
  • Pain in the abdomen or pain during sex.
  • A high temperature and flu-like symptoms.

You can learn more about STD symptoms and treatment with our helpful infographic.

Getting Tested for STDs

STD testing allows each individual to take control of their sexual health. But while STDs can be found in people of all ages, only limited numbers will get regular testing. To find a clinic in the local vicinity, conduct a search for STD testing near me. Having an LGBTQ+-friendly location like Radiant Health Centers can make all the difference, and increase the likelihood of testing becoming a regular and helpful routine.

How Are STDs Treated?

Alongside education and testing, STD treatment is pivotal in reducing transmission in the LGBTQ+ community. And as we have seen with HIV testing and treatment, significant change is only possible when effective healthcare is readily accessible.

STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes and syphilis all require a targeted treatment approach. And while many avoid treatment because there is no sign of an issue (or there’s a minor, “ignorable” symptom), more than likely, future health repercussions will become evident. At Radiant Health Centers we welcome the LGBTQ+ community to visit us for testing – we put our commitment to reduce STD transmission into practice every day.

Make-a-Will Month Orange County.

August marks the return of Make-a-Will Month – an important reminder of the need to create or update your will. This occasion also provides an opportunity to leave a legacy by donating to the LGBTQ+ community in Orange County. And as many Americans delay the estate planning process, this month serves as a gentle reminder of the benefits of creating a will for your loved ones and beneficiaries.

What Is Make-a-Will Month?

Make-a-Will Month is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of creating a will. While most people are mindful of the need to organize their financial affairs, fewer have actually taken the steps to safeguard those assets.

In fact, a recent Caring.com survey found that while 64% of Americans believe having a will is important, only 34% actually have an estate plan. During August, individuals and organizations are encouraged to spread awareness of the benefits of estate planning.

Why Do You Need a Will?

Without a will, the courts will determine the distribution of a person’s estate. Family members and loved ones could easily miss out on the assets and financial support that the deceased person had actually intended.

In addition, many people choose to donate to good causes through their estate. As an LGBTQ-friendly healthcare home in Orange County, we have been generously supported with contributions through wills and trusts. Make-a-Will Month is the perfect time to consider where you’d like your assets to go – and secure your wishes via a legal document.

How to Start Creating a Will

Creating a will is not as difficult as many people think. Here are some tips to get started.

  • Create a list of all your assets.
  • Consider the beneficiary designations of your assets.
  • Review an existing will and make any necessary changes.
  • Choose a trusted executor to carry out the terms of the will.

Support LGBTQ+ Healthcare With a Donation

Legacy giving is an opportunity to support the causes closest to your heart and make a lasting contribution. At Radiant Health Centers, the planned giving of our donors has indeed created a lasting impact on the Orange County LGBTQ+ community.

From our stigma-free, inclusive HIV and medical treatments to the growth of our counseling and youth programs, this support enables us to continue reducing health disparities. As part of our legacy giving program we welcome donations and gifts made via a will or trust, whether as a beneficiary of retirement assets or other investments. During Make-a-Will Month, please consider giving through your will, or by donating to Radiant Health Centers here.

Cultural competence in Orange County healthcare.

In an effort to address the many disparities in healthcare, cultural competence has taken center stage. As Orange County’s largest LGBTQ+ medical clinic, we have always worked to address barriers to quality care. But with healthcare inequalities still persisting for many groups, more must be done to deliver a higher quality of care. Inclusive care is the foundation that ensures access to personalized care and better health outcomes.

What Is Cultural Competence in Healthcare?

Cultural competence in healthcare is the ability to show consideration to people from diverse walks of life. To be culturally competent, medical providers learn how to communicate with and show sensitivity to individuals with different social and cultural backgrounds. The goal of this approach is to ensure that patients receive non-judgmental care that is tailored to their unique requirements.

Why Culturally Competent Healthcare Matters

Fundamentally, cultural competence in healthcare is about ensuring healthcare equality for everyone. However, as each person or group has different needs and health challenges, cultural competence does go beyond providing attentive healthcare. By understanding the LGBTQ+ community and other groups, providers can deliver a higher quality of care without false assumptions, discrimination or bias.

Inclusive care is a pressing need that requires a strategic approach, as many in the community are still struggling to find an LGBTQ-friendly healthcare provider in Orange County. Cultural competency training empowers medical providers with the understanding and skills to deliver stigma-free care that offers solid benefits for patients.

Cultural competence in healthcare aims to reduce health disparities for a cross-section of groups, incorporating race, gender, religion, cultural beliefs and more. For the LGBTQ+ community these challenges make themselves known in many ways, as shown by statistics from The Trevor Project in the list below.

  • 60% of LGBTQ+ youth needing mental health care could not access it.
  • 93% of transgender youth were worried about being denied gender-affirming medical care.
  • 45% of LGBTQ+ youth considered suicide in the past year.

Strategies for Providing LGBTQ+ Cultural Competence in Healthcare

Delivering culturally competent healthcare services requires an adaptive approach allowing response to each patient’s needs. Some common principles of inclusive care are as follows.

  • Acceptance of diversity in beliefs, lifestyle and values.
  • Not asking intrusive questions that are unnecessary for providing care.
  • Educating staff on best practices and non-judgmental communication.
  • Learning common LGBTQ+-specific physical and mental health challenges.
  • Using inclusive and gender-neutral language in communications.
  • Discussing and providing education on preventive care to live a healthy life.
  • An understanding of issues in the LGBTQ+ community (discrimination, harassment, HIV, substance abuse, etc.).
  • Providing access to LGBTQ+ counseling and mental health support.
